Friesland class submarine hunters

Description

This class of ships has been a defining feature of the Royal Navy for decades. For many, these workhorses of the fleet are among the most beautiful naval ships ever built. The painter has chosen to depict the fighter in the centre of the picture during the approach of a supply ship, which is outside the picture. The R(omeo) flag has been raised. The 12 cm cannon has been raised and the deck team are standby on the bow. Characteristic of the submarine chasers was that they threw up enormous amounts of spray at high speed. Due to the slender shape of the hull, the water flowed through a gully to the stern and was released there. The many visible radar antennas, sensors and armament determined the appearance of these ships. The submarine hunters served from the early 1950s to the early 1980s.
