Description

These two air defence frigates were variants of the Standard frigates and looked very similar. However, the L frigates were specialized in air defence rather than anti-submarine warfare and could serve as the flagship of an escort group. Maarten Platje served as a sailor on the Hr. Ms. Jacob van Heemskerck for a number of years and experienced beautiful squadron trips with this ship and the deployment to the Gulf War (Operation Phalanx).

These ships served for the Royal Navy for almost twenty years and were transferred to Chile in 2005.
