Description

Hr.Ms. De Ruyter and Hr.Ms. De Zeven Provincieën were the flagship of the Royal Netherlands Navy for years.

Construction of both cruisers had already started before the Second World War. But during the Second World War, construction progressed so slowly under the German occupation that after the Second World War the design could be completely adapted to the experience gained during the war. Both cruisers entered service in 1953 and 1954. The only difference between the two ships was that De Ruyter was equipped with an Atlantic bow during the war. Both cruisers were mainly used as flagships for Squadron 1 or 5. The necessary flag display was done abroad. De Ruyter served until the early 1970s (1972) and transferred to the Peruvian Navy in 1973.
